One of the important post-surgery goals is to work on your eating habits.
It’s not about sacrificing your favourite foods. Its about learning how to eat what you like- wisely.
Studies have highlighted the positive impact of millets (ragi) on blood sugar levels and have elevated its status from the poor man’s cereal to a gourmet ingredient.
The high content of soluble dietary fibre in millets makes it an ideal substitute for other cereals for those suffering from type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disorders.
Keeping this in mind, our guest speaker Ms Hina Gautam- a medical student who followed her passion for food to become a celebrated chef- brought to the table her ability to optimize taste and nutrition in our last Sunday’s support group meeting.
She shared tips on substituting high glycaemic load grains like rice and wheat with the gluten-free and diabetic-friendly millet.
Ms Gautam also demonstrated some delectable recipes that used millet as a key ingredient.
The interactive session at the end of the Meet allowed the audience to get valuable insights from Ms Gautam on improving the nutritional quality of their diet.
For those who missed out on this meeting, here is a delicious recipe shared by Ms Gautam. Try at home:
Recipe: Ragi (Millet) Rava Dhokla
1 cup ragi (millet)
¼ cup urad dal
1 cup semolina
¼ cup grated carrot
2 tablespoons chopped coriander leaves
1 inch piece ginger, grated
1 green chilli, chopped fine
½ teaspoon soda bi-carb
Salt, to taste
Soak the urad dal and ragi, semolina separately, overnight.
First, grind them separately to get a smooth batter and then combine them together.
Add the remaining ingredients to the batter and mix well.
Heat the steamer and pour the dhokla batter into the platter. Let the batter steam till the dhoklas are cooked.
Serve with coriander chutney.
