Skin and haircare tips by Dr Vishal Patel, leading plastic surgeon at Nobesity Support Group Meeting #25

Dr Vishal Patel Guest Speaker and Leading Plastic Surgeon

Majority of patients experience rapid weight loss in the first 6 months to 2 years after bariatric surgery.

The skin that was covering the obese body gets left behind, hanging lose in some patients. This may cause some insecurity and dissatisfaction among these patients.

Not to worry. Skin contains collagen- an elastic material which is likely to help skin bounce back after changes in body composition and new weight settle. There are also a few simple steps you can take to enhance skin tightness.

Some patients may also experience temporary hair-loss, hair thinning or change in texture in the immediate months after surgery due to some hormonal changes.

Hence its useful to know whether one should consider home remedies, medicines or a cosmetic surgery to address the issues one is facing.

Dr Mahish Khaitan answering audience questions

The expert plastic surgeon Dr Vishal Patel, our guest speaker in this meeting addressed exactly this topic and explained how simple remedies like staying hydrated, exercising and taking vitamin E supplements would resolve most of the problems. A small percentage of patients however may need medications and a few may have to undergo plastic surgery if the skin hanging is too much.

The session was interactive and audience questions were answered by both Dr Vishal Patel and Dr Manish Khaitan, Director Nobesity.
