Dietary Guidelines after Bariatric Surgery
After undergoing bariatric surgery, it is very important to follow the recommended dietary guidelines by our Nutritionist. These guidelines are carefully and scientifically designed by our nutritionist with the goals to limit the amount of calories you take, to provide balanced diet to avoid vitamins and minerals deficiency and to preserve your muscle mass.
Just after the surgery, the new diet pattern may seem a bit overwhelming but as we take you along the journey, almost you will be able to adapt yourself to these guidelines smoothly. Always eat balanced diet
Always eat small portions and frequently
Do not skip food for more than 3 hours
STOP eating if you feel pain, fullness, discomfort, nausea, or vomiting. Occasional vomiting is common and food intolerances vary on an individual basis. If a food is not tolerated, do not force yourself.
Keeping a daily record of your diet is very useful in tracking your progress. Please download the form to record your diet, (after record your diets please send to us by email).
Eat slowly and chew at least 20 times before you swallow.
Do not use straw, drink carbonated beverages, it might introduce air into you newly created pouch and cause abdominal pain or discomfort.
Always SAY NO to sugar, sugar containing foods, carbonated beverages, deep fried food, concentrated sweets and fruit juice.
For the first months of surgery , your calories intake should be between 300 to 600 calories per day, after that calories intake should be between 800 to 1200 calories
Fluid and liquid diet.
Always hydrate yourself
Take at least 2 litre of fluid per day
Avoid carbonated and sweet and caffeine from your liquid
To not take liquid with food
Always carry your liquid diet with you
Take fluid between 2 small meals.
Try to avoid alcohol
After surgery your intake would be low, which may result in decreased muscle mass in your body.
To avoid these consequences eat foods rich in high protein .
High-protein foods include poultry, soy milk, tofu, cottage cheese, yogurt and other milk product, eggs and meats.
Minimum intake of protein should be 65 to 75 grams per day. Don’t worry if you are unable to reach your goal for first few months after surgery.
Minerals and vitamins supplements:
You may need to take the mineral and vitamins supplements as prescribed by your Doctor to prevent nutrient deficiency.
Nutrient supplements may include Calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Selenium, Folic Acid, Iron, copper, zinc etc.
NOTE: All pills prescribed by your Doctor must be crushed into smaller pieces because it can be difficult for the pills to pass through the new anatomy.
Diet Progression after Bariatric Surgery.
Bariatric diets are designed to provide adequate fluids and nourishment while promoting weight loss after surgery. The diet is divided into five stages.
NOTE: Please do not advance the diet from one stage to the other without speaking to the dietitian.
Clear Liquid Diet: It normally begins the day after surgery, and lasts for at least a week. If no problems are experienced with clear liquids, your dietitian will add a high protein liquid supplement to your diet.
Thick Liquid Diet with Protein Supplements: You will begin adding thicker liquids that are high in protein and low in fat and sugar. Nutritionist may use high-protein, low-calorie liquid supplement or powders to meet protein requirements. This phase would also last for a week or so.
Low-Fat Puree Diet: In this phase your nutritionist will progress your diet to pureed foods. All foods are blended to the consistency of applesauce. No Concentrated Sweets to be consumed. Stage 3 may last for about two weeks based on Dietitian assessment.
Soft Solid Diet: of mashed potato consistency will begin in about four weeks after surgery under dietitian supervision and soft solid diet will continue for about a month.
Normal diet in small quantities which will begin in two month’s time after surgery under supervision of dietitian and surgeon if no other digestive or any other complications are present.
