Spine Care at Nobesity Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meeting #33

Nutrition and exercise are the key cornerstones of post-surgery recovery and care. It is important that neither of these two is neglected to reap maximum benefits from the bariatric procedure.

The 33rd Nobesity Group Meeting focused on explaining to the patients the importance of strengthening the back post-surgery and the overall importance of exercise in healthy living.

The spine is engaged in the performance of all activities – sitting, standing, walking, etc. Thus, maintaining the integrity of the spine is crucial to overall stability in body structure and posture.

Mr. Rajendra Modhiya who works with a spine surgeon shared information and tips on the type of back strengthening exercises that patients can incorporate in their recovery process.

Loss of weight also leads to loss of muscle. Staying committed to an exercise plan helps maintain lean body mass which contributes to a better metabolism, allowing you to stay on the path to a healthy post-surgery life.

While most patients start with a light exercise protocol within 2-4 weeks of their surgery, remember to consult your doctor or our team to draft an exercise plan for you. Make sure that you increase the intensity of exercises only as per the doctor’s guidance.

Remember: Patients who attend support group meetings are more likely to stick to their post-surgery regime and ensure sustained weight loss. The support group meetings at Nobesity are free of charge and open to our patients as well as patients of other surgeons. To register for our next support group meeting, call on +91 89999 49999

Manage Emotions to Manage Weight: Nobesity Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meeting #32

Obesity comes with significant emotional and psychological stress.

Bariatric surgery, by enabling sustained weight loss, corrects most negative emotions harbored by patients for lifetime such as depression, low confidence and low self esteem due to obesity.

However, some patients after Bariatric surgery too may feel a different type of emotional stress as they disassociate themselves with the old food habits and lifestyle.

Thus, our 32nd Support Group Meeting focused on managing emotions to sustain weight-loss after surgery.

Delhi-based senior psychologist Ms Nivedita Singh, our esteemed guest speaker of the day, addressed a group of over 100 patients and shared tips for making lifestyle modifications easy, avoiding substance abuse under stress, and developing healthy attitudes, beliefs and habits to sustain durable weight-loss after Bariatric surgery.

Hiten Raikundaliya and Swati Shah – two successful patients of Nobesity too were present in the meeting and shared their inspiring weight loss stories.

35 year old Hiten has lost 54 kilos of excess weight in the 11 months since his surgery and is now an active marathoner. He said, “In the past everyone would ask me about the best restaurants in town and now they ask me about the best sports events and marathon contests.”

Swati Shah, who has lost more than 80 kilos of excess weight since her surgery, used to be confined to a wheelchair before her surgery. It was a proud moment for her to step onto the stage on her own two feet and motivate the group.

Dr Manish Khaitan, Director Nobesity and team took questions and queries from the vibrant patients who turn up in large numbers to our monthly support group meetings conducted on last Sunday of every month.

Putting Protein in Diet at Nobesity Support Group Meeting #31

The right nutrition is a key aspect of post-surgery care for every bariatric patient.

And, protein is the cornerstone of a well-balanced and healthy diet.

It forms the building blocks of muscle and helps keep one satiated for a long period.

The 31st Nobesity Support Group Meeting on 3rd March was devoted to incorporating the adequate amount of protein in post surgery diets.

Many patients are hesitant to try protein supplements as they assume that they will be unpalatable and not tasty.

To bust this myth, samples of protein bars, shakes and chocolate were distributed to the attendees.

The Nobesity nutritionists explained how diet can be made protein-rich by making some simple substitutions and additions to regular food.

All attendees got a complimentary recipe book filled with innovative recipes to add flavor and fun to healthy diet.

Another highlight of the meeting was Best Motivational Patient recognition to a patient who convinced multiple others, unknown to him, to opt for the procedure and thus opt for a better life.

He also single-handedly convinced 14 obese patients from one family to undergo the appropriate Bariatric procedure for each one of them at Nobesity, India.

The meeting was a grand success with the crowd of over 100 present returning home with a better understanding of making their food healthy and delicious.

Acupressure for Gas, Indigestion and Constipation: Guest Lecture at Nobesity Support Group Meeting #26 on Sunday 30 Sept 2018 by Dr Bhargavi Ben, Expert Acupressure Practitioner.

It is our pleasure being committed to conducting regular support group meetings and bringing experts from multiple disciplines to enrich the post bariatric surgery life of our patients.

By the way you may be aware that we welcome patients who underwent surgery at other centers too, for our monthly support group meetings which is a life-long free of cost support service from us.

In our 26th such meeting last Sunday, it was an honor and privilege to have Ms Bhargavi Ben, eminent acupressure expert of Ahmedabad as our guest speaker.

Dr Bhargavi Ben explained that acupressure, with its roots in Chinese traditional therapy, promotes wellness without needles compared to acupuncture.

It believes that there are 12 channels or meridians in our body through which life energy flows. These meridians also connect our body organs and establish a system of communication between them.

According to this theory, when some blockage in any of these invisible meridians develops or energy balance is lost, a disease or a medical condition also develops.

Certain acupressure points lie along these meridians and when practitioners apply pressure on these points, the blockage gets removed or balance is restored, thereby relieving the body of its disease or the condition.

Dr Bhargavi also demonstrated acupressure on volunteering audience members and explained how the benefits of acupressure may be leveraged if acidity, indigestion or constipation is experienced by patients after bariatric surgery.

The session was interactive and audience questions were answered by both Dr Bhargavi Ben and Dr Manish Khaitan, Director Nobesity.

Skin and haircare tips by Dr Vishal Patel, leading plastic surgeon at Nobesity Support Group Meeting #25

Dr Vishal Patel Guest Speaker and Leading Plastic Surgeon

Majority of patients experience rapid weight loss in the first 6 months to 2 years after bariatric surgery.

The skin that was covering the obese body gets left behind, hanging lose in some patients. This may cause some insecurity and dissatisfaction among these patients.

Not to worry. Skin contains collagen- an elastic material which is likely to help skin bounce back after changes in body composition and new weight settle. There are also a few simple steps you can take to enhance skin tightness.

Some patients may also experience temporary hair-loss, hair thinning or change in texture in the immediate months after surgery due to some hormonal changes.

Hence its useful to know whether one should consider home remedies, medicines or a cosmetic surgery to address the issues one is facing.

Dr Mahish Khaitan answering audience questions

The expert plastic surgeon Dr Vishal Patel, our guest speaker in this meeting addressed exactly this topic and explained how simple remedies like staying hydrated, exercising and taking vitamin E supplements would resolve most of the problems. A small percentage of patients however may need medications and a few may have to undergo plastic surgery if the skin hanging is too much.

The session was interactive and audience questions were answered by both Dr Vishal Patel and Dr Manish Khaitan, Director Nobesity.

Spine Care in focus at Nobesity Support Group Meeting #24

Weight loss especially around the abdominal area eases the strain on the lower back muscles.

Dr Manish Khaitan answering audience questions

But, because these muscles and the spine have been under stress possibly for many years, it is natural to feel tension in that area. Additionally, urban lifestyle which involves long hours of sitting compounds the lower back issue.
